SMRLS' New Healthcare-Legal Partnership

Lawyers Advancing Wellness (LAW) at Open Door
Health and legal needs are mostly dealt with on their own. You visit a doctor for a health need. You talk to a lawyer for a legal concern. For many, this means choosing just one due to work hours, the expense, or lack of transportation. Plus, health and legal problems often impact each other.
Free legal help is now available at the doctor’s office. A SMRLS attorney is now at the Open Door Health Center in Mankato (ODHC) every day.
Lawyers Advancing Wellness (LAW) at Open Door is a new program for low income patients. Healthcare staff and SMRLS attorneys work together to help ODHC patients. The attorneys tackle the legal issues causing or adding to poor health.
Most patients visit the ODHC clinic in Mankato. Others use Open Door’s mobile clinics at Gaylord, Austin, and Worthington.
Legal problems that LAW helps with are:
- Family (divorce, custody, abuse).
- Housing (evictions, tenant rights, poor housing, rent subsidies).
- Utility shut offs.
- Government programs.
- Clean up criminal and eviction records.
- And more!
Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation makes this exciting partnership possible.
