SMRLS Clinic Receives Interfaith Progress Award

On May 11, 2017, Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services (SMRLS) and its new Power Up Legal Clinic partners, the Twin Cities Cardozo Society and Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, were the inaugural recipients of the Interfaith Action of Greater St. Paul’s Interfaith Progress Award at the Interfaith Actions Annual Meeting. The mission of Interfaith Action is to “unite the people, resources, and voice of the faith community to build a more just, safe, and livable East Metro for all.” The Interfaith Progress Award recognizes organizations and programs whose work involves new, renewed, or expanded frontiers in interfaith cooperation and address compelling community needs through interfaith cooperation.

The Power Up Legal Clinic was born in 2016 out of Morning Star’s Pastor Walker’s realization that a large number of his church members came to him with legal concerns. The clinic provides free, walk-in legal services to members of the church and broader community.

The Power Up Legal Clinic is hosted by Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church at 739 Selby Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55104. Clinics run every other Thursday and provide a safe space for community members to walk in and receive free legal help on non-criminal issues from Cardozo Society volunteers and SMRLS Upcoming clinic dates are July 20, August 3 and 17, September 7 and 21, August 3 and 17,  September 7 and 21,  October 5 and 19,  November 2 and 16, and December 7.
