Volunteer Attorney Coordinator, St. Paul

SouthernMinnesotaRegional Legal Services, Inc. (SMRLS) is seeking an attorney to fill a full time metropolitan area Volunteer Attorney Coordinator position to be located in its St. Paul Office. The person hired will be expected to recruit attorneys from Ramsey, Washington, Dakota, Carver and Scott counties to volunteer their time to handle civil legal cases and other matters pro bono for low income persons, to place pro bono cases with volunteer attorneys, and coordinate and run pro bono clinics.

SMRLS is a non-profit law firm which receives federal, state, local, public, and private funding to provide free legal help to low income and elderly people who reside in 33 counties of southern Minnesota, including the St. Paul metropolitan area. AsMinnesota’s oldest legal aid program (founded in 1909), SMRLS has established a tradition of partnership with the private bar, a bipartisan Legislature, the Minnesota Supreme Court and other Minnesota Legal Services Coalition programs in providing access to justice. SMRLS has an experienced, dynamic staff of 55 attorneys and 45 other staff. Hundreds of volunteer attorneys help staff provide legal assistance to over 10,000 eligible persons each year.

The Volunteer Attorney Coordinator position is responsible for the recruitment and retention of volunteer attorneys, initial case assessment as needed, case referrals and follow up, provision of support to volunteer attorneys as needed, record maintenance, statistical and financial reporting, administration of SMRLS’ metropolitan area Volunteer Attorney Program, recruiting and coordinating volunteers to handle community legal education programs and clinics, marketing the Program and SMRLS, public speaking, helping in planning and executing volunteer training and recognition events, fund raising from the private bar and other sources, and other duties as assigned.  Significant personal contact with attorneys and local bar associations throughout the five metropolitan counties in SMRLS’ service area is required, with regular travel throughout those counties. The responsibilities of this position may change over time based upon client and SMRLS program needs.


Three to five years of practice experience is preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Public speaking and ability to meet with professionals is required. Public relations skills and the ability to project a positive image of SMRLS, both directly and through yourself as a representative of SMRLS are required. Prior experience working with the private bar and attorneys is preferred and will be given great weight. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with low income persons, battered women, and persons from different cultural backgrounds is essential. Demonstrated ability to work constructively with others in a team work setting; good judgment; ability to learn quickly and accept constructive criticism; and willingness and ability to work hard, independently, and under pressure are required. Creativity and initiative are essential. Solid organizational skills are essential. Fluency in a second language, particularly one spoken by a significant number of SMRLS’ clients, will be beneficial but is not required. Computer competence and word processing skills required.


$47,475 for 5 yrs exp., DOE per salary scale. Very good fringe benefits.
