Summer Law Clerk, Saint Paul, Minnesota
Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services, Inc. (SMRLS) is seeking two law students to assist in evaluating cases for Criminal Expungement. The positions will both be located in SMRLS Central Office in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
SMRLS provides free, high-quality legal help in critical civil matters to low-income people in southern Minnesota. For 110 years, SMRLS has helped individuals and families secure and protect their basic needs, maintaining freedom from hunger, homelessness, sickness, and abuse.
SMRLS is working to identify cases where criminal expungement may be warranted. Law clerks would be expected to interview potential clients, perform investigations, review documents, and prepare cases for review.
The applicants selected will have the opportunity to learn firsthand about, and contribute to the effective expungement of criminal convictions. Similarly, those selected will gain experience in direct client interaction as well as experience working with attorneys and staff from other organizations.
- Completed one full year of schooling from an accredited Law School
- Demonstrated interest in addressing the needs of low-income communities
- The ability to relate to individuals from varying backgrounds and cultures
- Attention to detail
- Positive and flexible attitude
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Computer proficiency
May or early June 2019.
$15 per hour.
These positions are full time for a total of 12 weeks.
