Legal Secretary for Mankato Office
Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services, Inc. (SMRLS) is seeking to fill a full-time legal secretary position in its Southwest Region. This position will be located in its Mankato office.
SMRLS is a non-profit law firm, which receives federal, state, local, public, and private funding to provide free legal help to low income and elderly people who reside in 33 counties of southern Minnesota. As Minnesota’s oldest legal aid program (founded in 1909), SMRLS has established a tradition of partnership with the private bar, a bi-partisan Legislature, the Minnesota Supreme Court and other Minnesota Legal Services Coalition programs in providing access to justice. SMRLS has an experienced, dynamic staff of 55 attorneys, 45 additional staff and hundreds of volunteer attorneys to provide legal assistance to approximately 10,000 eligible persons each year. SMRLS currently has 12 attorney positions in its Mankato and Worthington offices, including two attorneys working on its Intake Hotline, as well as 2 paralegal, 2 volunteer attorney coordinator, and 4 legal secretary positions.

Mankato is located on the Minnesota River, about 90 miles southwest of the Twin Cities. There is a state university and several other colleges in the area. It is the regional hub for an estimated 260,000 persons in southern Minnesota.
Duties will include typing and word processing, opening and closing cases, e-filing, mail, reception and general office duties as assigned. Use of computerized case management system. If bilingual, will serve as interpreter for both spoken and written communication between clients and staff attorneys or paralegals. Handles multi-line phone system with voice mail. Interview potential clients to obtain statistical, financial eligibility, conflict of interest, and legal problem information. Responsibilities may change from time to time.
Bilingual skills strongly preferred, particularly Somali or Spanish. Bi-cultural experience preferred. Need excellent communication skills. Reliability, ability to work constructively with others, good judgment, ability to learn quickly and to accept constructive criticism, creativity, empathy for clients, reliable attendance, and ability to work hard, independently and under pressure are required. Non-academic experiences working with low-income communities are preferred and will be given great weight. Accurate word processing and computer skills required.
Starting salary range for this position: $27,300+ DOE with good fringe benefits.
