Immigration Supervising Attorney, St. Paul, Minnesota
Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services, Inc. (SMRLS) – Immigration unit is seeking an experienced lead attorney for its St. Paul, Minnesota office. The attorney will provide leadership and supervision for the unit’s two attorneys and three accredited representatives and provide immigration legal services to low income clients in SMRLS service area.
SMRLS is a non-profit law firm which receives federal, state, local, public and private funding to provide free legal help to low income and elderly people who reside in 33 counties of southern Minnesota, as well as, the areas served by its farm worker unit. As Minnesota’s oldest legal aid program (founded in 1909), SMRLS has established a tradition of partnership with the private bar, a bipartisan legislature, the Supreme Court and other Minnesota Legal Services Coalition programs in providing access to justice. SMRLS has an experienced, dynamic staff of approximately 60 attorneys and 45 additional staff. Hundreds of volunteer attorneys help staff provide legal assistance to over 10,000 eligible persons each year.

Provide immigration legal services and community education to eligible immigrants and refugees in SMRLS’ service area. Supervise staff, lead staff meetings, conduct case review, handle staff evaluations, and encourage staff development. Write grant applications and grant reports. Serve as a trainer and resource for volunteer attorneys handling pro bono immigration cases. Ensure compliance with SMRLS’ policies and consult with SMRLS’ staff on LSC immigration status eligibility. Prepare renewal applications for paralegal accreditation and organization recognition. Manage satellite office. Limited day travel required. Job duties may be shifted from time to time by SMRLS to meet client need.
Applicants must be licensed to practice in Minnesota. Ability to speak a second language is strongly preferred. 5 years+ of immigration law experience is preferred. Prior legal work supervision or other management experience is preferred. Non-academic experiences, particularly as they relate to an interest or background in the poverty community, will also be given weight. The ability to relate to low income clients, public speaking ability, good writing skills, ability to work constructively with a wide variety of persons, good judgment, ability to learn quickly and ability to work well independently and under pressure are required.
